Activities

Jakiunde's goal is to champion, design and assess initiatives that promote a knowledge society. The Academy aims to encourage the exchange of knowledge between Science, Arts and Literature, as well as to boost freedom of research and creation, as it regards knowledge as the driving force for social progress. In keeping with these values, it is involved only in intellectual and academic activities which are based on reflection, unrelated to circumstantial trends and guided by a critical spirit.

Jakin-Mina

Jakin-Mina

Jakin-mina is a programme for students aged 15-16 who are studying at secondary schools in the Basque Autonomous Community and Navarra, and it involves a series of lectures which cover numerous disciplines and are presented by leading experts in the field. The courses are held in Bilbao, Durango, Donostia/San Sebastian, Arrasate, Vitoria-Gasteiz, Iruñea-Pamplona and Tudela. Since it started in 2011, around three thousand young people have taken part in the programme.

By offering this activity, Jakiunde hopes to give these young people a broader outlook with regards to knowledge and to ignite their curiosity, boosting their interest in the search for the unknown.

Jakin-mina is sponsored by the Basque Autonomous Government and the Government of Navarre, as well as the collaboration of the following entities and universities: Fundación Caja Navarra, Kutxa Fundazioa, University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), Mondragon University, University of Deusto, Public University od Navarre (UPNA/NUP), University of Navarre, and Polymat.

Technology Milestones

Technology Milestones

The autonomous communities of the Basque Country and Navarre are small regions with limited resources, yet each has a history of getting things right when it comes to prioritising and aligning science and technology with the needs of business. While both communities are well positioned with respect to most regions of Europe, both in terms of business and of science and technology, there is still a risk of lagging behind the leading countries. We need a long term strategy that brings out the strengths of each of the communities and focusses on those technologies with the greatest chance of generating maximum economic and social return. This is called a Research and Innovation Smart Specialisation Strategy (RIS3).

Jakiunde has begun organising conferences to explore these matters. The first conference in the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country was held in collaboration with Mondragon University on 24 October 2018 in the Kursaal in Donostia-San Sebastián, sponsored by the Mondragon Corporation (MCC). The conference in Navarre, in collaboration with SODENA, the Public University of Navarre and the University of Navarre, was held on 26 November 2019 in Baluarte, Pamplona, sponsored by the Government of Navarre.

Music is in the arts, the sciences, religion, and countless other aspects of human life. Hence, HOTSAK-SONIDOS brings music together with other disciplines. After all, they are not so far apart in the real world.

Cursis de Verano de Ujué

Cursis de Verano de Ujué

The foundations of what must have been the first university of Navarre, founded by Carlos II in 1376, are located next to the church-fortress of Ujué. Taking advantage of this circumstance and at the same time as the 640th anniversary of this event, the Navarre Public University professor and member of JAKIUNDE, Humberto Bustince, began a series of free courses open to the general public in August 2016 within the range of summer courses offered by the Public University of Navarre. These have been held annually in the town since then.

These courses are structured around a series of informative lectures on scientific and social subjects and were initially given around the date of the Perseids meteor shower. This is because a fundamental part of the events is that participants have the chance to observe the night skies over Ujué (which has been classified by NASA as one of the best places in the world for astronomical observation because there is virtually no light pollution).

All the Ujué summer course activities are free of charge and open to any member of the public wishing to attend. In fact, it is usually the case that the different spaces where the activities are carried out turn out to be too small, due to the great social repercussion of the courses.
