Moneo Vallés, Rafael

Rafael Moneo Vallés (1937, Tudela) studied at the Madrid School of Architecture. He became professor of Elements of Composition at the Barcelona School of Architecture in 1970, taking over that same professorship in the Madrid School from 1980 to 1985, when he was designated chairman of Harvard University's Graduate School of Design (1985-1990). He is currently the Josep Lluis Sert Professor of Architecture in the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

Some of his projects include: the Kursaal Auditorium and Congress Centre in San Sebastian (1999), Museum of Fine Arts in Houston (2000), General Archives of Navarre in Pamplona (2003), Gregorio Marañón Maternity and Children's Hospital in Madrid (2003), the extension of the Prado Museum in Madrid (2007), and the Roman Theatre Museum in Cartagena (2008).

He is co-founder of the journal Arquitecturas Bis and has participated in national and international exhibitions and conferences. His book Inquietud teórica y estrategia proyectual en la obra de ocho arquitectos contemporáneos[1] has been translated into several languages.

He is a full member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando (Madrid); Honorary Doctor of Technology of the Royal Institute of Technology (Stockholm) and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts, American Institute of Architects, and the Royal Institute of British Architects.

He has received the Pritzker Architecture Prize (1996), Royal Institute of British Architects Gold Medal (2003), Spanish Architecture Gold Medal (2006), and the Príncipe de Asturias Award for the Arts (2012).
